What Is the Difference Between Sunscreen and Blockout Roller Blinds?

Sunscreen and blockout are fabric types, not blind types. Both can be used in roller blinds , and both serve different purposes.
Sunscreen fabric is a mesh weave that filters sunlight. You can see through it from the inside during the day. It reduces glare, cuts UV, and stops a portion of heat from entering the room. But it does not block the view or provide full privacy. At night, when the lights are on inside, people outside can see in through sunscreen fabric.
Blockout fabric is opaque. It blocks all light and provides complete privacy at any time of day. It is coated or backed with an additional layer that stops light penetration. Blockout fabrics also provide better thermal insulation than sunscreen.
Where to use each: Sunscreen in living rooms, offices, and any room where you want daytime light control without losing the view. Blockout in bedrooms, home theatres, and any room where darkness and privacy are the priority.
The compromise: double roller blinds that combine both fabrics on one bracket. Sunscreen for daytime, blockout for night. You get both functions on the same window without needing curtains or a second blind.
The colour of the fabric affects performance. Light coloured sunscreen fabrics reflect more heat and give better outward visibility. Dark sunscreen fabrics absorb more heat but reduce internal glare more aggressively.
We stock a wide range of both fabric types. Book a consultation and we will bring samples so you can compare the light filtering and the visibility through each option on your actual windows.
