How to Clean Roller Blinds Without Damaging the Fabric

Roller blinds are low maintenance compared to most window treatments, but they still need occasional cleaning. Dust settles on the fabric, and over time it builds up enough to dull the colour and affect the look. In kitchens, cooking residue adds a sticky layer. In bathrooms, humidity can lead to mould spots if the fabric is not moisture rated.

Here is how to clean them without causing damage: 

Regular dusting: Lower the blind fully so the entire fabric is accessible. Use a feather duster, microfibre cloth, or the brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner on a low setting. Work top to bottom. Do this every few weeks and the fabric will stay looking fresh for years.

Spot cleaning: For individual marks or stains, mix a small amount of mild dish soap with warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution, wring it out so it is barely damp, and gently dab the stain. Do not rub. Rubbing can spread the stain and damage the fabric coating, especially on blockout fabrics where the backing is a separate layer. After dabbing, wipe the area with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue, and leave the blind lowered until it dries completely.

Deep cleaning: For a thorough clean, lower the blind fully and wipe the entire fabric surface with a damp microfibre cloth using the same mild soap solution. Work in straight horizontal strokes from one side to the other, top to bottom. Rinse the cloth frequently. Let the blind dry fully before retracting it into the roll. Rolling up a damp blind traps moisture and can cause mould.

What not to do: Do not use bleach, ammonia, or harsh chemical cleaners. These can strip the UV coating and discolour the fabric. Do not put roller blind fabric in the washing machine. The agitation damages the stiffening treatment that keeps the fabric flat. Do not use a high pressure hose or steam cleaner. Both can warp the fabric and damage the roller mechanism.
