Double curtains are two curtain layers on separate tracks covering the same window. The front layer is typically a sheer or light filtering fabric. The back layer is a blockout or lined curtain. You operate each layer independently.

During the day, close the sheers and leave the blockout open. The room fills with soft, diffused light, you get daytime privacy, and the view outside stays visible through the fabric. In the evening, pull the blockout layer closed for full privacy and darkness.

This setup is one of the most popular window treatments we install across Brisbane. It works because it solves two problems at once. Sheers alone give you beautiful daytime light but no privacy at night. Blockout curtains alone give you darkness but leave the room feeling closed off during the day. Layering both on the same window gives you everything.

The track setup matters. Most double curtain installations use a ceiling mounted double track or a double rod. Ceiling mounted tracks give a floor to ceiling look that suits modern homes. The sheer runs on the front track, closest to the window. The blockout runs on the rear track, closest to the room. When both layers are open, they stack neatly to each side.

For motorised double curtains , each track has its own motor. You operate them independently using separate channels on a remote, through an app, or with voice commands. You can set timers so the sheers close at dawn to filter early light and the blockout closes at a set time in the evening.

Fabric pairing is where a lot of homeowners get stuck. The sheer needs to complement the blockout in colour and weight. A bright white sheer paired with a dark charcoal blockout can look jarring.
