A suburb that keeps growing
Thornlands is a coastal locality in Redland City, about 32 kilometres by road south-east of Brisbane. It takes its name from George Thorn, a big landholder whose property was subdivided around 1900, and for decades it was farmland growing citrus, bananas and mangoes. Parts of the south are still rural, on larger blocks.
Most of it is suburban now, and it's filling up fast. The census counted 10,520 people in 2006 and 19,263 in 2021. Bay View State School only opened in 2010. That growth means lots of recently built homes, and a lot of those have a study or spare room turned office.
The home office glare problem
If you work from home, you've probably had the afternoon where the sun lands right across your screen. You squint, you tilt the monitor, and eventually you shut the blind and switch the light on. Not ideal in the middle of the day.
What you want in a home office is a blind that cuts glare without making the room dim, and that you can adjust as the sun moves. Two products do that really well.
Zebra blinds
Zebra blinds have alternating bands of sheer and solid fabric on a continuous loop. Line up the sheer bands and soft light comes through. Offset them and the solid bands close the gap. It's quick to fine-tune through the day, and it looks sharp in a modern room.
Double roller blinds
A double roller blind puts two blinds on one bracket. Use a sunscreen or light filtering fabric in front for working hours, then pull the blockout down for video calls when the sun is at its worst, or for an evening movie. It's a very practical setup for a spare room that doubles as a guest bedroom.
Blinds Thornlands homeowners motorise
Newer homes are well suited to motorisation, and it's much easier to plan while you're choosing blinds anyway. We use Somfy or Alpha motors, run from a remote, wall switch, phone app or voice through Alexa or Google Home.
- Set the office blind to drop when the afternoon sun reaches that window, using a timer or light sensor.
- Close every blind in the house with one tap on your way out.
- Open the bedroom blinds on a schedule so you're not waking up in the dark.
Our motorisation page covers motorised roller blinds and curtains in more detail. If you already have curtains you like, we can often motorise them by fitting a new motorised track.
The rest of the house
Open-plan living areas in new builds often have big sliding doors. Double curtains with a sheer and a blockout on one track soften all that glass, or vertical blinds keep things simple on a wide door. In bathrooms and ensuites, PVC plantation shutters are moisture resistant, starting from $250 per square metre.
For a new home with no window coverings at all, it's worth doing the security and insect screens at the same time. We make security screens and doors as well.

Why Thornlands households choose us
We design, make and install everything in house, with no subcontractors, so the person who measures is part of the team that fits. Everything is Australian made in our own workshop. We're rated 5 stars on Google from 59 reviews, and Jessy and Puneet get mentioned a lot.
Motorised and cordless blinds also mean no loose cords for small children to reach, and any corded blind we install meets the ACCC mandatory safety standard for corded internal window coverings.
Nearby suburbs we service
Close by, we also look after Cleveland, Victoria Point and Ormiston. If the summer sun is the bigger worry, have a look at our notes on the best window treatments for a Queensland summer.
