A void area is any space in your home with a high ceiling, a double height window, or a stairwell that drops down through two levels. Modern Brisbane homes with open plan living often have these, particularly in two storey builds where the living area opens up into a full height glass wall.
The problem with void areas is obvious: standard curtains do not reach, standard tracks cannot span the distance, and even if you could hang something up there, how would you open and close it?
That is where void area curtains come in. They are purpose built for tall, hard to reach windows. The curtain fabric runs floor to ceiling on a heavy duty motorised track, and you operate them with a remote, a wall switch, or through a phone app. No ladder required.
We use Somfy and Alpha motorised curtain tracks for void area installations. These systems are reliable, quiet, and integrate with Google Home and Alexa if you want voice control. You can also set timers so the curtains open in the morning and close in the evening without you doing anything.
The fabric options are the same as regular curtains. Sheer curtains work well in void areas where you want to filter light without blocking the view. The tall drop of a sheer curtain in a double height living room looks clean and modern. If you need full blockout, heavier fabrics do the job, and the motorised track handles the weight without issue.
A few things to know before ordering void area curtains:
Measurement is everything. These are custom products. The drop, the width, the stack back clearance, and the motor placement all need to be worked out before manufacturing starts. We handle all of this during the free consultation.
Installation needs professionals. Void area curtain tracks are installed at height, and the wiring for the motor needs to be planned into the build or retrofitted correctly. Our team does this regularly and knows how to run the wiring cleanly.
They are not cheap, but they solve a real problem. If your void area windows are left bare, you lose privacy, you get heat buildup from unshaded glass, and the room never feels finished. Void area curtains fix all three.
If you have a double curtain setup in mind , we can do that in a void space too. A sheer layer and a blockout layer on separate motorised tracks, both controlled independently.
