A new suburb with an outlook
Spring Mountain sits just southwest of Springfield Central in the City of Ipswich, and it was built as part of Greater Springfield. In 2016 almost nobody lived here. By the 2021 census there were more than 6,000 residents, and Spring Mountain State School had opened in 2019.
The suburb takes its name from one of the rocky outcrops in the White Rock-Spring Mountain Conservation Estate. Cutting glare without losing the view
Big windows let in the view, and they let in the sun too. Here's what we tend to suggest, depending on how much you want to see.
Sunscreen roller blinds
A sunscreen roller blind is a fine woven mesh. From inside during the day you can still see out, while the fabric knocks back heat and glare on the TV and screens. One thing people don't expect: at night, with the lights on inside, it works the other way and people can see in. That's why many bedrooms get a blockout blind or a double roller as well.
Sheer curtains
Sheer curtains soften the light and blur the view slightly rather than blocking it. We like them in living areas where the room should feel open. Put a blockout behind them on the same track system and you have double curtains, which handle day and night in one.
Zebra blinds
Zebra blinds alternate sheer and solid bands. Line the sheer bands up and you look straight out. Shift them half a band and you get privacy. They're a good middle ground for a room that faces the street on one side and the view on the other.
Motorised roller blinds for tall windows
Higher-set windows and voids are hard to reach, and that's where motorised roller blinds earn their keep. We use Somfy or Alpha motors, run from a remote, wall switch, app, or Alexa and Google Home.
The feature people end up using most is the timer or light sensor. Set the west-facing blinds to come down when the afternoon sun hits, and they're closed before the room heats up, even if nobody's home.
External blinds for elevated decks
A raised deck with a view is great until 3pm, when the sun comes in low and flat. Motorised external blinds drop from the edge of the deck or alfresco and take the direct sun off before it reaches the glass. You keep the deck usable later in the day, and the rooms behind it stay cooler. They raise and lower on a remote, so there's no crank to reach for.
