Why Ripley homes need a different approach
Ripley is in the City of Ipswich, about 7.4 km south of the Ipswich CBD, and sits within the Ripley Valley Priority Development Area. It's one of the biggest growth areas in the state. The population went from 1,405 at the 2016 census to 4,288 in 2021, and the Ripley Town Centre opened in 2018.
It's also hotter than the coast. The Bureau of Meteorology's Amberley station, the long-running weather station on the Ipswich side, averages a January maximum a little over 31°C. Brisbane city averages about 30°C. One degree doesn't sound like much until you're sitting in a west-facing lounge at 4 pm in February.
Most houses in Ripley are new builds with big glass sliders and a lot of hard, open-plan space. Without decent window coverings, afternoon heat comes straight through the glass and stays in the slab.
West sun: what actually helps
The west side is where we spend most of our time on jobs out here. The order that works best is to stop the heat as far out as you can, then deal with glare inside.
- Motorised outdoor blinds on the patio or alfresco take the sun before it reaches the glass. They make the biggest difference of anything we fit.
- Plantation shutters on west windows let you tilt the blades against low sun and still get air through.
- Inside, a roller blind or curtain handles whatever gets past. Which kind depends on the room.
Sunscreen or blockout rollers?
This is the question we get asked most, and the honest answer is that you usually want both, in different rooms.
Sunscreen rollers
Sunscreen fabric is a fine mesh. It cuts glare and a good share of the heat while you can still see out to the yard. That makes it good for living areas, kitchens and home offices. The catch is at night: with the lights on inside, people can see in, so it's not a bedroom fabric on its own.
Blockout rollers
Blockout stops light and gives full privacy. It's the one for bedrooms, media rooms and any west window you want sealed up in summer. The downside is you lose the view while it's down.

Plantation shutters in the heat
Our plantation shutters are custom PVC, which suits Ipswich summers. They're moisture resistant, so they also go in bathrooms and kitchens. They come fixed, hinged, bi-fold or sliding, and fitted inside or outside the frame.
Pricing starts from $250 per square metre. They cost more up front than a roller, but people who have lived with west sun for a summer or two often decide they're worth it.
Where curtains still make sense
Curtains aren't only for looks. A lined blockout curtain across a big slider traps a layer of air against the glass, and in summer that helps. Double curtains give you a sheer for daytime privacy and a blockout for the evening. For raked ceilings and tall windows we make void-area curtains, often with a motorised track so nobody needs a ladder.
