About Deebing Heights
Deebing Heights is about 9 km south of the Ipswich CBD and forms part of the Ripley Valley growth area. It's named after Deebing Creek, and the name comes from the Ugarapul word for mosquito. The area stayed mostly rural until acreage estates started appearing in the 1990s.
It's grown quickly since then. The population almost doubled between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, to just under 4,000, and Deebing Heights State School opened in 2016. Housing is a mix: larger homes on acreage in the south and more modest homes on smaller lots in the north. Most of the people we meet here are families setting up a house they plan to stay in.

There's no single right answer for a whole house. It depends on what each room does. Here's how we'd approach a typical family home.
Living and family rooms
This is where plantation shutters make the most sense. You tilt the louvres to control light and privacy, and they're cordless, so there's nothing for small kids to pull on. Our custom PVC shutters come in fixed, hinged, bi-fold or sliding panels and start from $250 per square metre.
If you'd rather a softer look, double curtains with sheer and blockout on one track system suit big living-room windows and sliding doors.
Kids' bedrooms
Go for double roller blinds. The light-filtering blind gives daytime privacy, and the blockout one gets a toddler's room dark for an afternoon nap or a summer evening that stays light late. Main bedroom
A double roller works here too, but a lot of people want something softer in their own room. Blockout curtains or Roman blinds both do the job and look less like a practical fix.
Bathrooms, ensuites and laundry
Our PVC shutters are moisture resistant, so they're a strong choice where steam and splashes would wear out fabric. PVC or aluminium venetian blinds are a lower-cost alternative that still wipe clean.

If the kids and the barbecue live outside, motorised external blinds take the afternoon sun off the patio and raise at the press of a remote.

Shutters cost more up front than most blinds, and we'll be upfront about that. What you get is a fitting that's built into the window rather than hung in front of it. PVC doesn't mind moisture or knocks, there are no cords to wear, and the look doesn't date the way a fabric pattern can.
They also stay with the house. If you sell in a few years, buyers walk into rooms that are already finished. We'd suggest doing shutters in the rooms people see first and using blinds elsewhere to keep the budget sensible.
