Curtains and blinds Flagstone: alfresco, sliding doors and sun control

A One Curtains and Blinds designs, makes and installs custom curtains and blinds in Flagstone, with a focus on the parts of a modern home that take the most sun: alfresco areas, big sliding doors and west-facing living rooms. Everything is made to measure in our Hillcrest workshop in Logan and fitted by our own team. We come out to your place for a free measure and quote.

Living in Flagstone

Flagstone takes its name from Flagstone Creek, which runs down to the Logan River near South Maclean. Suburban development started here in 1996, Flagstone State School opened in 1998, and the state declared the Greater Flagstone Priority Development Area in 2010. Peet's Flagstone master-planned community is the big one on the ground now, with thousands more homes planned over the coming decades.

For window coverings, that history shows up in the houses. Most homes here are recent builds with open-plan living, wide stacking or sliding doors and a covered alfresco that's meant to be used as a second living room. The trouble is the sun. Western light across a tiled alfresco in February will send everyone back inside, and glare through a three-panel door can make a TV unwatchable.

Our curtains and blinds for Flagstone alfresco areas

The alfresco is where we'd start in most homes out this way, because it's the space people most often give up on.

Motorised outdoor blinds drop down the open sides of the alfresco to block low sun, wind and rain. They're made to measure for each opening, so they close properly at the edges. A remote or wall switch runs them, and with a timer or light sensor they can come down on their own in the afternoon.

Why motorised? Outdoor blinds are big, and big blinds are a nuisance to wind by hand. If a blind is hard to use, it tends to stay up, and then it's doing nothing. A button fixes that.

We also look at what the outdoor blind does to the room behind it. With the alfresco shaded, the living room gets less direct sun through the glass, and the inside blinds don't have to do all the work.

Big sliding doors

Most of the homes we see have at least one wide sliding or stacker door between the living area and the alfresco. There's no single right answer for them, but these are the options we'd talk through:

  • Curtains on a track, in sheer for daytime privacy or a double sheer and blockout for evenings. They stack neatly to the side when the door is open.
  • Motorised curtains if the door is very wide. One button beats walking a four-panel curtain across the room.
  • Vertical blinds, which are practical if the door gets used all day by kids and dogs.
  • Zebra blinds for a cleaner look on doors that open less often.

And because the door is open so much, it's worth pairing it with an insect screen or a security sliding door with welded corners in diamond grille, heavy duty or pet mesh.

Sun control inside the house

Not every window needs the full blockout treatment. For living rooms that face west, sunscreen roller blinds are one of our most useful products. The mesh fabric cuts glare and heat while you can still see out, which is exactly what you want at 4pm on a hot day.

Double roller blinds put a sunscreen or light-filtering blind and a blockout on the same bracket, so the same window works for afternoon glare and for sleeping. They're popular in bedrooms and media rooms. For wet areas, PVC plantation shutters handle moisture and start from $250 per square metre.

Why choose A One

We're a Logan business that makes its own product. That means Australian made curtains, blinds and screens, measured and installed by our own people with no subcontractors in between.

Our Google rating is 5 stars from 59 reviews, and customers often name Jessy and Puneet from our install team. After the install, we're still around for repairs and professional deep cleaning. If you have young kids, it's also worth knowing that corded internal coverings must meet the ACCC's mandatory safety standard. Motorised blinds and curtains take cords out of the equation altogether.

Flagstone questions, answered

Contact us

Do you come out to Flagstone for measures?

Yes. The measure and quote are free, and we bring full-size samples so you can see them in your own home and light.

What outdoor blinds suit an alfresco area?

Motorised external blinds made to fit each open side of the alfresco. They block low sun, wind and rain, and you control them with a remote or wall switch.

Why choose motorised outdoor blinds over manual ones?

Outdoor blinds are large and awkward to wind by hand, so manual ones often get left up. Motorised blinds come down with a button, and a timer or light sensor can lower them automatically.

Which motors do you use?

We use Somfy or Alpha motors. Depending on the setup, you can use a remote, wall switch, app, Alexa or Google Home, timers or light sensors.

What's the best way to cover a wide stacker door?

Curtains on a track stack neatly to the side and suit wide doors well, and motorising them makes wide spans easy. Vertical blinds are a practical alternative for high-traffic doors.

How do I cut glare without losing my view?

Sunscreen roller blinds use a mesh fabric that reduces glare and heat while you can still see outside. They're a good fit for west-facing living rooms.

What is a double roller blind?

Two blinds on one bracket, usually a sunscreen or light-filtering blind in front and a blockout behind. You use one for daytime glare and the other for sleep or movie nights.

Can you add security doors to sliding doors?

Yes. We make sliding and hinged security doors with welded corners in diamond grille, heavy duty or pet mesh, plus insect screens for windows and doors.

Can you motorise curtains I already have?

Often we can, by fitting a motorised track and rehanging your existing curtains. We'll check the fabric and weight at the measure.

Do you install plantation shutters in Flagstone?

Yes. Our custom PVC plantation shutters suit bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms and start from $250 per square metre. They can be fixed, hinged, bi-fold or sliding.

Who installs the blinds?

Our own team, not subcontractors. Customers often mention installers Jessy and Puneet in their reviews.
