Motorised blinds replace the manual chain or cord mechanism with a small electric motor inside the roller tube. You operate them with a handheld remote, a wall mounted switch, a phone app, or voice commands through Google Home or Alexa. That is the basic setup.
The motors we use are Somfy and Alpha. Both are reliable, quiet, and designed for residential use. Somfy is the industry standard globally. Alpha is a strong alternative that costs a little less without giving up much in performance. Both brands integrate with smart home systems and support features like timers and light sensors.
Timers let you set the blinds to open at 7am and close at sunset, every day, without touching anything. Light sensors respond to how bright it is outside and adjust the blinds automatically. These features are useful if you travel, if you want consistent privacy management, or if you simply do not want to think about your blinds.
Motorised roller blinds are the most common motorised product we install. They suit bedrooms, living areas, home offices, and any window that is hard to reach manually. We also motorise double roller blinds, curtain tracks , and external blind systems .
The question most homeowners ask is whether motorisation is worth the extra cost. Here is how I think about it:
If you have more than six or seven windows, operating each one manually every morning and evening gets tedious. Motorisation turns that into one button press. If you have high windows, skylights, or void areas, motorisation is not optional. You cannot safely reach those windows with a manual chain.
If you are doing one or two windows and they are at normal height, manual operation is fine. The extra cost of a motor does not add enough convenience to justify it on a single bathroom window.
The cost difference varies by window size and motor type. Battery powered motors are cheaper to install because they do not need wiring. Hardwired motors are more reliable over time but need an electrician during installation.
We stock both options and can advise on which suits your situation. If you are building new, get the electrician to run wiring to the window heads before the walls close up. It costs almost nothing at that stage and gives you the option to motorise later even if you do not do it now.
For existing homes, battery motors are usually the better choice. They install in an hour per window and the batteries last about a year before needing a recharge.
