Way to Fix a Roller Blind

Roller blinds are an effective way to filter unwanted light by using sheer or blackout fabrics. Roller blinds give you complete control over the amount of light you want in the room, by rolling up or down of the sheer/blackout fabrics. This rolling up or down action is achieved through a chain pulley or a spring loaded mechanism.

Roller Blinds

In this article, we’ll learn how to fix a roller blind in a stepwise manner. To understand how to fix a roller blind, we must go through its various parts and basic mechanisms.

What are the components of a Roller Blind?

Roller Tube

A roller tube or a roller is the tubing to wrap the fabric around when the blinds are rolled up. Its cylindrical shape hides underneath the fabric when the blinds are fully rolled up.

Fabric

Sheer or blocking, fabrics form the main functional component of blinds. They’re made from a variety of materials ranging from cotton to polyester, with a textured surface to facilitate friction that allows for easy rolling.

Bottom Bar

It’s the weighted bar at the bottom of the blind to keep it weighed down, stable, and taut when rolled down.

Mechanism

It’s responsible for the up and down rolling of the blinds. There are different types of roller blind mechanism, such as chain pulley, spring loaded, motorized, etc.

Brackets

Brackets are used to attach roller blinds to window frames/walls.

End Caps

End caps cover the ends of the rolling tube, thus securing the mechanism in place while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of roller blinds.

Chain

Pulling or releasing on the chain initiates and relaxes the spring loaded mechanism, leading to the rolling up and down of the blind.

How Does A Roller Blind Work?

There are different mechanisms at play while rolling up and rolling down the window blind.

When rolling up, tugging on the control chain or cord activates the spring loaded mechanism within the roller tube and it starts to spin on its axis, thus rolling the fabric around it. When completely rolled up, the fabric is concealed in the roller tube.

Similarly, releasing the control chain causes a break in the spring loaded mechanism which causes the rotation of the rolling tube to immediately stop. In the absence of further rolling and under the influence of gravity, the blinds come down and the fabric covers the window.

Why Is Your Roller Blind Not Rolling Smoothly Like It Used To?

There are many reasons why your roller blinds are not working properly. To diagnose the issue, you must check the chain connector and mounting brackets.

      • Sometimes, due to excessive tension on the roller blind chain, the fabric can get jammed up in the roller tube, obstructing the smooth flow.
      • Uneven rolling of fabric also causes trouble in proper rolling up and down of the blinds.
      • Mounting brackets after some use may get loose which may cause the fabric to jam in the roller tube.
      • Check the hardware for any structural damage.

How To Fix The Chain On A Roller Blind?

      Double Roller Blinds Brisbane

In case of increased tension the roller blind chain, gentle pulling of chain will release the tension. If the chain is too loose, you’ll have to take down the blinds and adjust the spring tension. At times, chain connectors may need replacement. You can check for any dirt or grime on the chain from time to time. Accumulated dirt on the chain can also reduce the rolling efficiency.

        How To Fix Fabric Jamming?

In case of uneven rolling of fabric, unmount the roller blind, unroll the fabric and then carefully roll it back evenly before mounting. When you remount the roller blind, make sure that it’s not lopsided or off centre, which can also lead to uneven fabric rolling and its snagging in the mechanism.

        Check For Hardware Damage

In case of hardware damage like broken brackets etc, replacing the damaged components will fix the issue. Loose brackets can be tightened to avoid jamming of fabric inside the rolling tube.
